"So, are you free this weekend?"[break][break]
Caleb glanced up, meeting the warm gaze of ollie morales. Late afternoon light filtered in through the library window, gently dusting the shelves of books with a golden glow. Outside, chirping Nincada sang their summer symphony, heralding the end of another school year.[break][break]
"Should be," Caleb answered, grinning. "I've got kickboxing with Zev Saturday morning, then we usually get breakfast at the diner after. Gotta help my dad with the lawn in the afternoon, but after that we should hang out."[break][break]
He snapped the history textbook shut - Kanto through the ages - giving Ollie his full attention. Final exams were only a few weeks away; he knew he should get back to studying, but it was hard to focus when Ollie was around. Caleb didn't quite understand why that was the case: he'd known Ollie since they were in elementary school, after all. There was no logical reason for why just looking at Ollie would give Caleb Butterfree in his stomach, but the sensation had been happening more and more these days.[break][break]
It was something about the way Ollie regarded Caleb when they were together: like Caleb was special.[break][break]
"Well, why don't we see a movie?" Ollie suggested, tilting his head slightly, which caused a lock of chestnut hair to fall cutely across his brow. "Eva said there's some sort of "movies in the park" series going on just off route 7. We can get pizza!"[break][break]
"Sounds fun," Caleb agreed, nodding. Is he asking me out on a date? The thought came unbidden, but as soon as it crossed Caleb's mind, he blushed. Of course not. This was Ollie. They were friends, teammates, study partners...[break][break]
"You allright, Caleb? You're all red."[break][break]
Concern mixed with adoration, but with an undercurrent of teasing. The song and dance of the teenaged heart.[break][break]
"Yeah," he answered hastily, smile widening. "Better than ever."

ollie morales's emerald eyes were smoldering in the low light, glittering gemstones that reminded Caleb of the sort of riches one might find hidden away amidst the murky depths of a sunken ship, some long-forgotten pirate's treasure. The two boys were leaning against one another, lingering in the park even after all of the other movie-watchers had left. Above them, stars winked like a thousand tiny eyes, playful voyeurs.[break][break]
"Hm?" Caleb asked casually, though his chest tightened in sudden anticipation.[break][break]
"Remember that time, at soccer camp, uh, last Summer?"[break][break]
His heart hammered. How could he ever forget?[break][break]
"'Course I do, Ollie...what about it?"[break][break]
It was hard to ignore the heat of Ollie's body against his: it would be so easy for Caleb to slip his arm around the other boy's shoulders, pull him into a - [break][break]
"I've been thinking about it, and uh, I know I denied it back then but - "[break][break]
With a yank, Caleb drew Ollie in and pressed his lips to the other boy's with a decisive certainty. Ollie jerked, surprised, but then melted into the kiss. They remained like that for several long, precious moments, the scents of fresh-cut grass and discarded popcorn containers permeating the air as they fumbled for one another. It was passionate and awkward and perfect: the way young love should be.[break][break]
Sometime later - [break][break]
"I want to date you," Caleb sighed into Ollie's ear. "Properly."[break][break]
"I want that too," Ollie grinned, face flushed, lips swollen. "It's what I always wanted, Caleb. From the start."

Caleb strode across the training grounds, droplets of morning dew sparkling atop blades of freshly cut grass, keen blue eyes searching for a familiar face.[break][break]
"You're late," she scolded as he approached. She wore a wide grin, however, and her eyes twinkled mischievously.[break][break]
"You're right, I'm late," he agreed, grinning back. "Blame my co-ruler, if you wish. He kept me too long this morning, discussing infrastructure."[break][break]
"Liar," she quipped immediately, poking him in the chest with her wooden training sword. "You were with Barnaby. You let him keep you in bed too late."[break][break]
Caleb opened his mouth to protest, then laughed.[break][break]
"I'm that easy to read, huh?"[break][break]
"You don't have any secrets. You're the king, remember? Besides," she added, shrugging. "You make him happy. We're glad for it."[break][break]
We. Caleb smiled, chest warming at the reminder. It had not been easy to earn the witch of Motostoke's acceptance, but he had done so by proving to her just how deeply he loved the girl they shared - the girl standing before him. But it wasn't just for Lisette; he was willing to be a father to her so that her true father would not have to, as was his unspoken wish. The price of loving all of them was a fair one.[break][break]
In the end, they were something like a family. Untraditional. Imperfect. But a family nonetheless.[break][break]

"There's a council spot open," dahlia goode said softly, hands folded neatly across her desk. "You would be a good fit, Caleb."[break][break]
He sat up straight, curiosity piqued. His brow creased slightly; he dared not get his hopes up, but her heart hammered in his chest all the same. After all the hard work he'd put in as a Head Ranger, there was still a measure of apprehension that gnawed at his heart in regards to the amnesty he'd been granted so many years ago. But this was the sort of opportunity he'd been waiting for...[break][break]
"Would the League really vote for me?" He asked, tentative. "Someone with my...background?"[break][break]
The commissioner considered him, her expression thoughtful.[break][break]
"There are some who would not. But the majority would, I think. The League is sorely in need of new perspectives. And besides, your story is a hopeful one."[break][break]
Was it? He supposed ever since the resurgence of the Ranger Reform Program, backed by prominent League heroes such as ollie morales and freya morningstar, Hoenn had come around to viewing such successful rehabilitation stories as positive ones. Besides, with so much instability in the region as of late, the citizenry could use a reminder that hardship didn't always destroy a person. Sometimes, it heralded victory - sometimes, it made a person stronger.[break][break]
"Allright," Caleb breathed, letting go of any lingering doubts. "I'll do it."[break][break]
He was rewarded with a rare smile from the commissioner. Not the sort of smile she put on to save face, or to politely address the public. No, it was a sincere smile. Relieved, even.[break][break]
"The region thanks you for your service."[break][break]
"Don't thank me yet," he laughed. "I haven't been elected."[break][break]
"You've already done so much, Caleb Harcourt. Don't sell yourself short. This is merely the expected next step for a man like you."[break][break]
He bowed his head to her in acceptance. A part of him used to rebel against such praise, but he'd grown past that sort of self-laothing. It did little good to wallow in it, after all. He'd learned that the hard way.[break][break]
"You're right. I am worthy."
